The Randal Foundation is proud to support Doctors with Africa CUAMM UK to provide safe caesarean section delivery and strengthen maternity services at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) in Sierra Leone.
Doctors with Africa CUAMM UK will strengthen lifesaving maternity and emergency services at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH), Sierra Leone’s national referral centre for maternal care and comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care in Freetown.
Over 12 months from June 2026, the project will help ensure safe Caesarean sections for approximately 3,000 women, directly saving an estimated 6,000 lives when mothers and their babies are considered together.
With support from the Randal Foundation, the project will guarantee uninterrupted C‑section capacity through the provision of essential equipment, medicines, laboratory reagents and medical consumables, particularly for women treated in the Emergency Department and High Dependency Unit (HDU). It will also strengthen infection prevention and control by supplying key materials to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections.
Specialised clinicians will provide on-site training, mentoring and technical assistance to medical and nursing staff in the HDU and Emergency Department, building skills in the management of obstetric emergencies and care for critically ill mothers. This investment builds on CUAMM’s longstanding partnership at PCMH, where the organisation has worked since 2016, at the request of local authorities, to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by improving clinical capacity, health information systems, hospital management and the availability of essential equipment and supplies.
