Community Action Nepal

The Randal Charitable Foundation proudly supports Community Action Nepal.

Community Action Nepal is delivering life-changing health, education and livelihood programmes to remote mountain communities in Nepal.

The charity works in partnership with local Himalayan mountain communities to help them raise their standards of living whilst strengthening and protecting indigenous cultures and traditions.

They deliver programmes where support is needed most. The charity responds to requests for support after receiving petitions for help from communities themselves. The local residents then play a key role in the planning, construction and implementation of health, education and livelihood provision.

Community Action Nepal promotes local ownership of their programmes, or ensures a smooth handover to the Nepal government, so that they become a stepping stone on the path to development, and not the path itself.

These mountain communities, which the charity supports, are especially vulnerable to the impact of natural disasters, climate change and global health emergencies. Building resilience is vital for these communities to become more self-reliant or less dependent on international aid.

Their ‘Build Back Better’ programme after the 2015 Nepal earthquake involved the construction of seismically resilient buildings, blending traditional building materials and local craftsmanship with modern construction design.

And their response to the Covid-19 pandemic supports the local communities to grow more varieties of food and create income-generating enterprises, increasing their food security and promoting economic independence.

The charity puts sustainability at the heart of everything they do, and source local materials for construction and utilise the skills of traditional local craftspeople.

This supports local economies, reduces donor dependency, preserves indigenous skills and ensures that the communities can maintain and repair the buildings using materials found locally.

The charity’s agriculture and livelihood programmes are designed to strengthen food security by developing locally sustainable organic food production.

In 2023 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided grant funding for one health post for one year in North Gorkha, Nepal.
