Excellent Development is a registered charity that supports some of the world’s poorest people to transform their own lives through water and soil conservation in drylands.
The charity’s purpose is to support rural communities in dryland areas to gain access to clean water and grow enough food to eat and sell. They pioneer the application of sand dam technology as part of an integrated approach to water security and sustainable development.
The charity also focuses on influencing and educating those who can help achieve their vision including – but not limited to – policy makers, international NGOs, government departments and civil engineering firms.
Their charitable objectives are to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment for the public benefit.
They also aim to relieve poverty, in particular but not exclusively, by supporting sustainable development projects. They also seek to advance the education of the public, in particular but not exclusively by the undertaking and dissemination of research.
In 2020 and 2021 the Randal Charitable Foundation agreed to make grant funding towards their Sand Dam project in Malawi, which will help provide safe clean water for three rural communities there, as well as deliver a sustainable water supply for the future. The project will also train the communities in a range of environmental protection measures and sustainable farming techniques, to help restore degraded land and boost food production.
Excellent Development’s Chairman, David Jordan OBE, said: “We are profoundly grateful to the Randal Charitable Foundation for supporting three communities in Malawi to implement a pilot sand dam programme, to bring a reliable source of food and water to these communities.
“In addition to constructing pilot sand dams, the programme will see farmers implement a range of environmental protection measures and sustainable farming techniques, enabling farmers to produce more food in the long term, whilst also protecting valuable ecosystems.
Particularly in the face of the worsening climate crisis, projects like these are playing a vital role in enabling communities to become food and water secure, so we cannot thank the Randal Charitable Foundation enough for choosing to support this work.”
