Hands Up is a small and innovative charity that funds health and education programmes in the Middle East.
Their aim is to make a positive difference to those in need, and they work directly with local organisations who know the needs and context of their local communities better than anyone.
The charity’s mission is to give the people they help a hand up, not a hand out. And They partner with local organisations which deliver aid directly and effectively in a complicated and volatile part of the world.
Support for the charity provides doctors and teachers, who in turn provide vital education and health services, strengthening the stability of local society and, crucially, fostering hope.
The charity raises money and awareness through creative fundraising initiatives, which give others a tangible way of helping. Having started out by holding Middle Eastern-inspired feasts at their kitchen table in 2012, the charity has now grown significantly, having raised over £6 million to date.
The motivation for the charity is that, since 2011, the lives of millions of Middle Eastern people have been shattered. In some countries more than half of the population have had to flee their home, including thousands of doctors and teachers, who are either internally displaced or have left as refugees. Many children have only ever known a country in conflict. Some do not know their country at all, never mind what a classroom looks like.
In 2022 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided grant funding to cover the salaries of three nurses at a primary health clinic.
