HIPZ

Health Improvement Project Zanzibar (HIPZ) has since 2007 been dedicated to improving the autonomous Tanzanian island of Zanzibar’s health system.

The charity believes that every Zanzibari should have access to safe health care when they need it. They manage two hospitals, train local staff and run a progressive mental health programme. They support a community of over 350,000 people.

The charity is also working with the Government towards the goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage in Zanzibar, as well as working with and in the communities they serve.

From the grassroots to the Government, HIPZ is embedded in every level of the health care system in Zanzibar and they are a catalyst for positive change. This includes running their flagship programme in two hospitals, and strengthening systems at hospital and government level.

The charity’s model is to deliver a whole healthcare system approach. They work at every level; from empowering the staff on the ground to driving up the quality of care, to collaborating with the Ministry of Health to making changes at policy level.

They build the capacity of local staff by investing in them and providing holistic training; from clinical degrees in anaesthesia to leadership and management courses for their Hospital Management Team.

As well as focussing on quality management, the charity also develops the infrastructure and equipment in the hospitals to make them safer, more hygienic and better equipped to facilitate their critical work.

In 2021, the Randal Charitable Foundation provided grant funding for 8 reclining beds with wheels for a brand new Emergency Department at Kivunge Hospital in Zanzibar. This will be the first ever Emergency Department outside of Zanzibar’s capital, Stone Town.
