Midland Langar

Apr 16, 2020

Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS) is an organisation that strives to help those in need around the UK.

The charity was established in October 2013 in Walsall, providing hot food and drink to those living on the streets and on the poverty line. Since then the charity’s work has grown and they now offer support for schools, as well safe houses for victims of abuse.

The Society operates on a Sikh based ethos, where they help and support all people regardless of social status.

In 2020 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided funding for a mobile van to give out food and supplies, like sleeping bags, to those isolated in Leicester because of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. In 2021 the Foundation provided additional grant funding for the purchase of food and packaging supplies to provide 40,000 meals within 10 months to vulnerable individuals

About 5 years ago MLSS started providing a hot meal & drink service in Leicester City Centre to the homeless population on a Saturday evening expanding this out to more recently providing this 5 days a week however due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures this was brought to an abrupt halt.

MLSS through its strong links with the community decided quickly to modify the meal service it had been providing for the last 5 years and kick-started the MLSS Covid-19 outreach meal service. MLSS became the primary organisation providing meals 7 days a week to homeless people who had been housed by the Leicester City Council.

The first week of this outreach meal service saw MLSS providing 200 meals which quickly increased as referrals came pouring in from other organisations asking MLSS to provide meals for elderly and isolated people who had been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak meaning they were unable to leave their homes to shop for food.

MLSS Leicester are currently running their Covid 19 outreach meal service 7 days a week and as a result are serving over 3,000 meals a week to the residents of Leicester who have been affected by Covid 19.
