Our Sansar

Jan 21, 2022

Our Sansar's mission is to provide education, shelter and welfare to the most disadvantaged children in Nepal for whom little or no help is forthcoming.

Their work is focused on Province 2 where there are no other organisations providing assistance to street children or other children needing emergency support.

The charity was established to help the hundreds of children, primarily boys aged between 3 and 16, who live on the street in the regions of Nepal bordering India, after being abandoned due to poverty and abuse. The charity now has expanded its operations to also assist children who have experienced neglect, abuse, child labour and girls who have been victims of trafficking, rape, violence and other trauma.

Our Sansar means ‘Our Family, Our World’ in Hindi and Nepali. They run a home for street children in Parwanipur, a small village near the busy border city of Birgunj, Child Helpline in Birgunj, and a Children's Protection Centre (Safe House for girls) in Janakpur.

In Parwanipur, they have around 20 happy boys who enjoy going to a good school, being well fed and thrive in loving homely atmosphere. The boys enjoy various extra curricular classes such as computer, guitar, dance and cricket, every week. They grow their own organic vegetables, keep chickens for eggs and provide older boys with work experience placements to make sure the project is sustainable.

In July 2018 they opened a Day Care Centre in Birgunj city, and in July 2019 they moved to a larger building and launched the first ever Child Helpline in the area which on average helps 25 children each day. They work in cooperation with local authorities to assist street children and also child labourers and trafficked children.

In March 2021 they launched a Safe House for girls who have been victims of trafficking, rape or violence as there are no other services like this in the area despite a huge need. There is a live in counsellor, social and field workers, all focused on the girls' well-being, education and prosecution of the perpetrators. There are usually between 10 and 15 girls staying at the safe house at the moment, and many more are being helped within the community.

In 2021 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided grant funding towards the Child Protection Programme in Janakpur, Province 2, Nepal. This includes funding the Child Helpline in the area, the Children’s Home for Boys and the work of the outreach officers at the Girl’s Safe House.
