S.A.L.V.E International

S.A.L.V.E. International supports children to stop living on the streets in Uganda.

They do this through support, love, family reunification and education. The charity works in a variety of ways to reduce the number of children having to live on the streets of Uganda, which all have education at the heart of them.

Their Street Outreach Programme helps to build strong trusting relationships with the children through street walks, sports and their Drop in Centres.

The charity’s Halfway Homes offer a place of love and learning for the children as they leave the streets to help them prepare to be resettled with relatives.

They run a programme of Home Tracing and family resettlement, which allows the charity to try to find the best solution to help children to permanently leave the streets and settle in a caring family home.

Their Drug Rehabilitation Programme is supporting children who are addicted to sniffing aeroplane fuel to overcome their addiction, gain vital skills and become drug educators for their peers.

While their Family Skills and Business Empowerment Programme helps families of resettled children start up their own businesses so that they can support their children and reduce the risk of them returning to the street due to poverty. The charity also supports the children whose family cannot currently afford to take them back to school to be able to return to education.

Their Research, Community Education and Partnership work also helps to reduce the number of children who will come to the streets in the first place and challenges negative attitudes towards street-connected children.

The briquette cooking fuel Social Enterprise offers skills training for the young people undergoing rehabilitation at S.A.L.V.E. as well as generating a small income to support their work to help more children leave the streets.

Another great project is the Permaculture Programme which teaches the children and young people who are staying with the charity to learn sustainable farming techniques, as well as providing permaculture training for vulnerable rural families of street-connected children.

In 2020 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided a grant to support children living on the streets of Jinja, Eastern Uganda. This included offering support and opportunities to children to create better and safer lives.
