Shama Women’s Centre provides a safe place for the women of Leicester to make friends, learn and reach their full potential.
Many of its service users are vulnerable women subject to poverty, health inequalities such as poor mental health and increasingly domestic abuse.
It was founded in 1985 by a group of Leicester women whose mission was, and continues to be, to empower local women from different backgrounds to become socially, educationally and economically active.
For 35 years they have helped women from diverse communities to overcome cultural, economic and language barriers to achieve wonderful things.
They help local women who might otherwise experience isolation to become active and valued members of the community.
Those attending the centre are invited to take part in workshops, receive advice and use their facilities to build confidence, gain qualifications, experience and find employment.
The centre also provides childcare and has a women-only sauna and gym facilities, which are focussed on improving health and wellbeing.
In 2020, 2021 and 2023 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided funding towards a dedicated support worker for domestic abuse victims.
Through social, educational and employment support the centre has helped thousands of women to gain confidence, qualifications, find work and improve their health and wellbeing.
