SHINES CHILDREN (UGANDA)

The Randal Foundation are proud to support Shines Children (Uganda) UK Supporters who work in a narrow geographical area in Masindi District, Western Uganda, supporting its local development partner Shines Children’s Foundation to relieve poverty in a number of ways.

The largest project supported by Shines Children UK is a rural primary school in the village of Miirya. The construction of the school, funded by Shines Children UK, began in 2019 and was completed in 2023, with boarding accommodation added in 2025. 400 children attend the school, of whom around a third receive a wholly free education funded by UK sponsors, a further third receive a subsidised fee rate, and a third pay full “market” fees.

Each year since 2023, for two days in October, the school campus is transformed into an ad hoc clinic for the operation of a medical camp, with more than 40 volunteer doctors from the UK and Uganda working together in a multi-agency approach. Each year more than 1,000 people have received free medical care, ranging from cancer screening to dental care, eye testing to malaria treatment. A primary care clinic diagnoses patients, prescribing medication free of charge or referring patients to other treatment centres for secondary care. In 2026 a second camp will take place supported by the Randal Foundation.

Shines Children (Uganda) UK Supporters also provides training in income-generating skills to local youth and women, sexual health and reproductive rights education, environmental protection activities (including solar cooking and indigenous tree planting) and operates several dozen Village Savings and Loan Associations in nearby communities. In 2025 Shines ran its first non-medical volunteer program, with a group of 10 UK volunteers working o a variety of projects that made full use of their individual skills.
