Steps

Jul 06, 2020

Steps is a centre of excellence dedicated to helping children with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders to maximise their full potential.

Based in Shepshed, Leicestershire, Steps runs a number of programmes, which are organised to suit the specific needs, of particular age, and ability groups.

The charity works with babies, pre-school children, and over-fives who may be attending mainstream schools.

Each child attends one session or more each week, with his or her parent. Parents normally work alongside their child throughout the day, in a creative three-way partnership with staff.

In 2019 the Randal Charitable Foundation approved grant funding over three years to provide specialist education to a number of disabled children.

The funding was sought to deliver a new group called The Randal Rhinos. This work was to help alleviate the number of children on the waiting list and to become an assessment group for children who were waiting for a place in an appropriate group to support their complex needs.

Steps also found that the parents in particular found this group to be of major importance to them. One of the hardest things is to reach out for help in the first place and to be able to offer a place at Steps without having to go through a waiting list has been really beneficial to the families and to the charity’s staff team who believe firmly in early intervention.

For those attending the charity’s groups, each day consists of a number of inter-related programmes, designed to encourage the children to acquire and develop the skills needed to equip them for everyday situations. Individualised support is also complemented by group activity.

As part of their support to children in mainstream schools, the charity runs regular sessions designed to develop a wide range of physical skills, and build self-confidence, in a lively environment.
