The Sinazongwe drought recovery project is a vital 12-month initiative led by The School Club Zambia, a UK charity and Zambian NGO. The project aims to provide clean, reliable water to three rural schools, Chisyabulungu, Matambo, and Sikuteke, in a region emerging from three severe years of drought that have depleted water sources and placed communities under intense strain.

This project will fund the drilling of Sikuteke School’s first borehole, alongside installing a solar-powered pump and tank stand, delivering a sustainable water supply. Without clean water, children at Sikuteke face harsh learning conditions, struggling to concentrate while risking exposure to dangerous waterborne diseases like cholera. School Club Zambia staff have observed girls leaving lessons for up to 45 minutes to fetch water from a distant well, a burden that disrupts learning and falls disproportionately on girls.

At Chisyabulungu and Matambo, borehole pumps have broken down after prolonged dry spells, threatening the education of more than 2,200 children and the wellbeing of 12 teachers living at the two schools. This project will restore these water points with deep ground pipes and solar-powered pumps to provide year-round clean water.

Over 12 months, it is estimated that approximately 5.5 children under five will be saved from water-related deaths, while health, sanitation, and education will improve for 4,312 children and community members.

Founded in 2011 and registered as a UK charity in 2014, School Club Zambia works closely with Zambia’s Ministries of Education, Health, and Community Development to ensure programmes align with national priorities for sustainable impact. With the Randal Foundation’s kind support, this project will be both lifesaving and life changing. The deep access boreholes installed are expected to have a life span of 20 years, providing sustainable access to clean water that will dramatically improve health, education, and wellbeing for thousands of children and their communities, securing a safer and brighter future for generations to come.

Quote from a trustee which is from The School Club Zambia’s UK Chair, John Kirkland OBE:

“The project provides clean and reliable water for thousands of children, but it’s impact will be much wider. It enables them to remain in education, learn more effectively whilst there and restore a whole community which has suffered from three years extreme drought. For many, it will be a lifeline. “
