Village Water has a mission to end water poverty in Zambia and Mozambique, one region at a time.
The charity’s work supports the most vulnerable communities living in remote, rural and poor areas in Nalolo, in Western Province, Zambia, and Chimoio, in Manica Province, Mozambique.
They are working in collaboration with their local partners, councils and other water NGOs to ensure no one gets left behind and to deliver 100% water coverage in these districts, before moving to the next.
Working with two experienced local partners they have reached over 300,000 people since they began 16 years ago. The in-country teams are experts when it comes to working in their communities and deliver all project activities on the ground in Zambia.
Village Water support their local partners to carry out hygiene and sanitation promotion, including hand washing and the cause and prevention of disease, improve water access, and train communities in pump maintenance and healthy hygiene practice – to ensure families can enjoy safe water and good health for the rest of their lives.
They focus their projects in schools, villages and health centres – where people spend most of their time – to have the greatest impact for as many people as possible.
Providing these basic facilities of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education changes lives; health dramatically improves, women and girls can be more than just water collectors, children can go to school and families can work their way out of poverty.
To increase access to safe water in the wider country they also promote manual drilling – the cheapest, safest way to reach remote areas in Zambia and Mozambique – and provide training and support for local people to become professional manual drillers. They have trained 9 teams so far.
In 2019 The Randal Charitable Foundation provided grant funding to support the set-up of 3 desperately needed projects in Mozambique. This involved the provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education in one large rural school and its neighbouring village.
A further grant was made in 2021 to fund and restore water pumps for 20 villages in the Manica Province in Mozambique.
In 2022 additional grant funding was provided to rehabilitate 20 water points, and to provide training for a community in Western Zambia.
The funding also facilitated the set-up of a new manual drilling spares and repairs workshop; bringing a dual impact of accessible safe water and training and income generating opportunities for more people.
