World Child Cancer

The Randal Charitable Foundation proudly supports World Child Cancer.

World Child Cancer’s vision is a world where every child with cancer has equal access to the best treatment and care. They are a leading international children’s charity dedicated to addressing the global inequality in childhood cancer care.

It is estimated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that there are over 400,000 children developing cancer worldwide each year. Childhood cancer can be cured when detected and treated early.

World Child Cancer support 13 programmes in Africa, Asia and Central America. They have helped over 40,000 children with cancer to access treatment and care working with local, regional and international partners to support systems-based solutions.

Founded in 2007, World Child Cancer was established by Geoff Thaxter who lost his daughter, Lisa, to cancer when she was 12 years old.

There are no words to describe this kind of loss. But from his grief came a new determination, and Geoff knew he would do everything he could to help others in the same situation.

Director at CLIC Sargent (the UK’s largest children’s cancer charity) and founding member of the Childhood Cancer Parent’s Alliance, Geoff was an active part of the support community.

It wasn’t until he visited a Bangladeshi children’s unit with his wife, Gill, that he saw just how wide the gap in childhood cancer care can be.

When Geoff returned home, his ambition was clear: To make sure every child with cancer has equal access to the best-possible treatment and care, no matter where they are in the world. Enlisting the help of Professor Tim Eden, Dr Raul Ribeiro, Gordon Morrison, and a team of like-minded parents from around the world. Together they set about bringing his vision to life.

Today the charity stands united behind his vision and are committed to improving diagnosis, treatment and care in some of the world’s marginalised communities.

The Randal Charitable Foundation provided significant grant funding to support the charity’s work, which will allow children with cancer to access and receive lifesaving treatment at the Yangon Children’s Hospital (YCH) in Eastern Asia.
