World Kindness Day 2024, reflections from our Chairman, Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL

It’s World Kindness Day – and for me, it’s a day that can’t go without mention.

After all, kindness is central to humanity; it’s an incredible power we all have within us, and a potential we can all lever. That’s potential to truly connect with those around us, to strengthen our relationships and to let others know just how important they are, just as they are.

Kindness for me means saying a little more when more needs to be said, holding out a helping hand when it would support a friend, colleague or neighbour – and by walking a mile in the shoes of those in need.

A mile? Yes. So we can give, help and support to those who would be stronger for that kindness. So we can make a bigger difference, for a brighter future.

Sometimes kindness can be as simple as a smile. Other times, it’s something specific you can do – and sometimes it’s holding back: saying nothing. Choosing not to leave an “indelible negative” on social media, might be the best demonstration of kindness holding back, in today’s online culture. Perhaps.

But equal to this, kindness is being true to ourselves, being kind to ourselves. Leaving time for self-care, for family, for community. As it’s from this foundation, I believe, that we’re able to act with kindness in our wider world. And in doing so, encourage others to do the same.

On World Kindness Day – be yourself, your own version of kind. But why not take a conscious moment to go further too. It’ll be reflected back, for sure. And let’s hope, tomorrow will be better for all of us, if we do.
